Every camera, from the historic camera obscura to modern digital systems, operates on a basic principle: light reflects off a subject, passes through a lens, and strikes a light-sensitive surface to record the image.

In the past, that surface was chemical film. Today, it is an electronic digital sensor made of millions of light-sensitive pixels.
